The Swim:
The 1st wave starts at 6:52 am (unless there is a weather delay). Each wave is designated by a letter in the alphabet. The same color cap may be used for more than one wave. Don’t change waves. Lost your cap? See a race official at the swim start to get the correct color cap.
Participants will swim 1.2 miles (1.9 km), which will be held in the protected waters of Miami Florida. Water temperatures average about 72-76 degrees F. Wetsuits may be worn in the water temperature up to and including 24.5 degrees Celsius/76.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures exceeding 24.5 degrees Celsius/ 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit will not be eligible for awards, including World Championships slots. Wetsuits will be prohibited in water temperatures greater than 28.8 degrees C/ 84 degrees FINAL WATER TEMPERATURE WILL BE TAKEN PRIOR TO THE EVENT START BY USAT HEAD OFFICIAL. The transition between the swim and bike will take place at the beautiful BayFront Park.
You should seed yourself according to your swimming ability (fast swimmers to the front of your wave). You are prohibited from striking or swimming over another swimmer(s). Failure to heed the warnings and commands of an official or lifeguard will result in a DQ and ejection from the event. The swim finishes about 150-yards from the entrance to transition. The water is 10-12 feet deep with the water temperature typically in October will be in the low to mid – 70′s. If the water temperature is 76 degrees or less, wetsuits are allowed. To avoid overheating, it is recommended that you wait until 10-15 minutes before your wave start to put on your suit. Keep the suit rolled down to your waist until just before you enter the water. If you are new to wetsuits, purchase the wetsuit from a reputable dealer and insure a proper fit. Heed the manufacturer’s warnings. Note: It is recommended that you train in your wetsuit under supervision before wearing the suit in a competition.
Please don’t bring any extra gear to the swim start.
The Bike:
Athletes will endure a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride. The majority of the bike course encompasses the quiet, scenic communities of Miami. During this ride, the athletes will pass great architecture work consisting of classic and modern mansions as well as a mini tour of the Mediterranean Style City of Coral Gables.
It is highly recommended that you have your bike fitted, inspected and tuned no more that 3-weeks before the race. You’ve got 56 miles of road ahead, so a fresh set of brake pads and tires should also be considered.
Although the traffic will be light through most of the course, you should be alert at all times (particularly at intersections) and aware of your fellow competitors particularly when passing or being passed. You are required to ride to the far right if you are not in the act of passing and only pass on the left. If you are not passing another rider, but riding to the left, that is termed blocking and is a “DQ” offense.
The Ironman 70.3 Miami is a USAT sanctioned event. Drafting Marshals on motorcycles will strictly enforce USAT rules including the prohibition of drafting. Failure to heed the commands of an official may result in your disqualification and ejection from the event.
There may be caution areas on the bike course (transition & turns) where you are required to slow and ride single file. Race officials will be on hand, and failure to heed their commands will result in a penalty or your disqualification.
You are prohibited from using a cell phone or Walkman-like device (radio, cassette player, CD Player, MP3 Players, small screen TV, etc.) while on the bike course. Use of such equipment is a “DQ” offense.
If you break down on the bike, you must remove yourself and your bike from the course. Officials with vans will be circulating the course. Need assistance? Flag down a van. If you are close enough to transition after completing most of the course, you may run or walk your bike in and continue the race.
The Run:
- The running course takes athletes on a 13.1 mile (21 km) run. As the runners make their way through this course, they will endure one of the most beautiful ports around the world; Port of Miami. This is where most of the cruise lines depart to make their way to their destination points. The course will consist of a two loops.
Aid stations will be located at 1-mile intervals. Although the roadways on the run course are closed to vehicular traffic please keep your eyes open and use caution when passing through intersections. Avoid contact with other runners. If you intentionally strike another runner (Race Officials call) you may be penalized.
All race courses are subject to change depending on construction or weather. Please check back at this site for course updates.

About the Ford Ironman World Championship
The inaugural “Hawaiian IRON MAN Triathlon” was conceptualized in 1977 as a way to challenge athletes who had seen success at a local biathlon. San Diego-based John Collins proposed combining the three toughest endurance races in Hawai’i – the 2.4-mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and the 26.2-mile Honolulu Marathon – into one event.
On Feb. 18, 1978, 15 people came to Waikiki to take on the Ironman challenge. Prior to racing, each received three sheets of paper with a few rules and a course description. The last page read: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life!”
In 1981, the race moved from the tranquil shores of Waikiki to the barren lava fields of Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Along the Kona Coast, black lava rock dominates the panorama, and athletes battle the “ho’omumuku” crosswinds of 45 mph, 95 degree temperatures and a scorching sun.
Now in its 32nd year, the Ford Ironman World Championship centers on the dedication and courage exhibited by participants who demonstrate the Ironman mantra that “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. ®” On Oct. 9, nearly 1,800 athletes will embark on a 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit to earn the title of “Ironman.”
