2011 RACE INFORMATION
Spec-Savers IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa Triathlon, is officially recognised by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) as calendar event.

AFRICAN ENTRY FEE
- Normal Entry -Until Midnight on 5 November 2010- R 1300(Incl. VAT)

GENERAL NOTE
At registration, athletes must present passport/ identity documents in order to collect their race packs.

- Awards Ceremony ticket
* Teams will receive one item per team member
WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURE
* All dates are valid until close of business on the specified days
Ironman 70.3 South Africa will be offering withdrawal insurance (optional) that will cover the athlete’s registration fees (subject to the conditions listed below).
CANCELLATION POLICY
If an athlete does not select this withdrawal insurance then the following conditions will apply:
- Until 23 September 2010– 25% cancellation fee
- From 24 September - 5 November 2010 - 50% cancellation fee
- From 6 November 2010 – 100% cancellation fee
An entry may not be carried over to the next year, given to another person or used for another event. Payment for additional tickets for the Award Banquets will be fully refunded until the 6 November 2010, as from the 7 November 2010 a 100% cancellation fee will also apply here.
WITHDRAWAL INSURANCE
Ironman 70.3South Africa will be offering withdrawal insurance that will cover the athlete’s registration fees (subject to the conditions listed below). The cost of this insurance will be R200.00 whichmust be selected onapplication.
This insurance will pay 100% of the registration fee back to the athlete until the 14 January 2011. South African law is applicable, place of jurisdiction is Port Elizabeth.
Conditions of Withdrawal:
- Sudden severe illness* - such as heart problems, sugar diabetes, hypertension, mental illness requiring hospitalization, as long as the athlete is been diagnosed for the first time.
- Injury* - as a result of training or accident that will stop the athletes from training for longer than 4 weeks.
- Death or severe injury of family dependant* - if a family dependant is killed or severely injured requiring the athlete’s presence/attention. Family dependants are deemed to be the insured person’s spouse (or life partner living in the same household), children (stepchildren, sons and daughter- in-law, grandchildren), parents (step-parents, parents-in-law, grandparents) and siblings.
- Pregnancy – if the pregnancy was not discovered until after the insured person has signed up for the Ironman. If the pregnancy was discovered prior to signing up for the Ironman, the nominal sum will only be refunded if severe complications arise in the pregnancy.
- Substantial property damage – to the insured persons property at his/her place of residence as a result of nature (earthquake etc) or criminal offence committed by a third party, making the insured person presence necessary.
*Requires a doctor’s letter.
NOTE:
•If the reason for withdrawal is one of the reasons listed above you are required to fill in the withdrawal form, attach all relevant documentation (doctor’s letters, insurance policies and/or letters from the police) and forward toTriangle Eventsoffice.
•If the reason for withdrawal is none of the above, normal withdrawal policy as described above will apply.

THE TRIATHLON
1.9 km Swim

The 1.9km / 1.2 mile swim is an ocean swim. The water temperature should be between 17 and 25 °C, therefore wetsuits are legal. The course will be swum in an anti-clockwise direction. The first leg will be 300m long – the buoy must be rounded on the right hand side (buoy must be on your left). After turning left around this buoy the next leg is 600m, this buoy must also be rounded on the right hand side. The following leg is 200m long and again you must round the buoy on the right. The final leg before the exit to the beach is 600m long and you need to round this last buoy on the left. The exit to the beach is 200m away.
The race will start in5 waves - Please Note: These are preliminary start times and can be changed up until race briefing on Friday,21 January 2011 at 18h00.
Wave 1: 07h00 - Pro Athletes
Wave 2: 07h15 - Men 18 - 39
Wave 3: 07h25 - Men 40 - 80+
Wave 4: 07h35 - All Ladies 18 - 80+
Wave 5: 07h45 - Teams
Wetsuits will be allowed.
The cut-off time for the swim is one hour and ten minutes from the wave start.

90km Cycle

The cycle is a single 90km lap course. The first portion is along the esplanade (beach front)
were after the route follows the R72 motorway towards the Nahoon River. The route then turns left and follows the N2 highway towards King Williamstown. It is a continuous gentle climb with a few flat sections to the turn around point at Berlin just outside East London (45km). The return route is on the opposite side of the N2 highway back to transition. There will be full road closure.
The gearing that is recommended is 52/38 in the front and 11 - 23 at the back. Deep sections, discs and bladed wheels will be fine, but if the wind blows you might battle with a solid. The route will be closed to civilian vehicles. Aid stations will be available, at to 20km, 45km and 60km marks. The cut off time for the cycle is 4 hours 5 minutes. Due to the fact that the race is in wave format, the cut off time for the cycle will be applied after the race. If you did not achieve the 4 hours 10 minutes cut off, you will not be recognized as an official finisher and will be listed as DID NOT FINISH in the official results and not receive a certificate. The official cut off will only be applied to the Third Wave – Teams and they will be stopped before the run leg.
The cut off time for the cycle is 4 hour and 5 mins.
If you do not achieve the 4hr 5min cut off, you will not be allowed to start the run section. Cut off times will be applied to the entrance of the transition area.
Cut Off Times per wave will be:
- Wave 1: 12h15
- Wave 2: 12h30
- Wave 3: 12h40
- Wave 4: 12h50
- Wave 5: 13h00

21km Run

The run route of 21 km / 13 miles will consist of two laps of 10.5km each.
Athletes will leave the Transition Area after the cycle and run down past the Orient Theatre, turning RIGHT towards the pier. Run along the pier and turn around the beacon at the end of the pier. Return along the pier and pass the Finish Line chute before heading out along the Esplanade. Continue along the Eastern Esplanade, up into John Bailie Road. At the Aid Station in John Bailie Road, turn right into Turnberry Avenue. Follow the road, which becomes Gleneagles Road once you have passed the entrance to the East London Golf Club, and turn right into Galway Road. The Turn-Around Point will be at the Schenker Aid Station, which is situated at the corner of Galway Road and Epsom Road (opposite the Nutting Badminton Hall).
On your return, you will run past the Finish Line chute and once again continue out onto the pier before repeating the loop.
There are 4 Aid Stations on the run and you will complete 2 loops before finally making your way to the Finish Line.
The cut off time for the run is 3 hours and 15mins. Each wave will have a cut off time 8 hour 30min after each wave start. Those people crossing the finish line after these cut off times will not be recognised as an official finisher. Those still on the course will be stopped and given a lift back to the finish unless they are within the last kilometre.
Cut off times per wave will be as follows:
- WAVE 1: 15h30
- WAVE 2: 15h45
- WAVE 3: 15h55
- WAVE 4: 16h05
- WAVE 5: 16h15
